A-LEVEL MASTERCLASSES

OUR COURSES

The move from GCSE to A-Level study is a steep learning curve for all students.  The content and skills required at A-Level are significantly more difficult and the expectation of independent learning is higher.  It is crucial for most students to seek additional support in the study of A-Level courses.

Our courses cover the most popular A-Level choices. You will choose one subject, to be studied for six hours.  This intensive focus on one subject is proven to embed learning and ensure retention of knowledge. All of our classes will be held in a purpose-built education establishment in central London.

Most of our A-Level subjects are exam-board specific, so you will focus on topics and question-types that will appear in your examination.  There will be a maximum of thirty students per masterclass, giving you the opportunity to ask questions and seek the support needed.

All our tutors have real-life experience of delivering A-Level in the classroom and have worked with one of the major examination boards. Our tutors will recap the key areas of content required for your subject, with a major focus on the form of questions and how these are assessed against the mark scheme. You will be shown exactly how to approach questions in order to attain the highest levels, with our tutors modeling answers, showing you how to structure responses.

Our role will be to give you the confidence to succeed in your A-Level examinations.

English Language

Our tutors are experienced in teaching English Language A-Level in the classroom and working with major examination boards in the assessment of the skills required.

English Language A-Level is a complete departure from what you experienced in your study at GCSE.  This can be disorientating and confusing for students, making it more important to work with our experienced tutors to reintroduce and reinforce new and difficult concepts.

The focus in A-Level English Language is the investigation of language use.   The focus is much more explorative than creative, making it more science than art.  Our tutors will model the approaches to exploring language variation, child language, and the use of language to craft meaning.

This is an A-Level that requires a sound understanding of new terminology and concepts.  Our tutors are skilled at embedding knowledge of such concepts as mode, field, function, pragmatics, and discourse.

There are elements of this A-Level that are not assessed, such as the creative writing assignments.  Although work can be done in these areas, the focus of our tutors will be on examination concepts and questions.

English Literature

Study of English Literature is intellectually and emotionally engaging but involves an in-depth knowledge and appreciation of a range of texts.  Success at A-Level English Literature will require a detailed response to drama, prose, and poetry.

You will be expected to know two plays in depth, one of which must be Shakespeare.  You will need to show understanding of the contextual factors that help to shape interpretations of these plays.  Your interpretation will be enhanced by engagement with critical writings on the text.

You will also study two thematically-linked prose texts, one from before 1900 and study a selection of poems from two published poetry texts.  Our tutors understand that one of the major tasks facing you is knowledge of such a breadth of literature.  They will use a range of activities to help bring these texts vividly to life.

Our tutors of English Literature are passionate about the texts they teach.  They will help to facilitate discussion about overarching ideas, themes, and critiques, as well as focus your responses to gain the most marks possible.

In your intensive revision sessions, you will cover all the major topics, including electric circuits, mechanics, magnetic fields, nuclear and particle physics, space, and thermodynamics to name just a few.
